He killed his father, and now he must pay the price. Stefan Wishart, Heir Prince of Angliana, wants only one thing the approval of the man that should have been his father. At age ten, when he overhears a conversation between his parents—the queen and prince consort—he learns the reason for the prince’s antipathy toward him. Stefan’s not his real son. He’s the bastard child of a pirate. Nine years later, Stefan’s mother runs off with the infamous pirate by way of magical beads that promise to give the wearer anything they desire…at a cost. If the beads granted his mother’s wish, wouldn’t they grant his? If he kills the pirate—his real father—he could gain the approval he’s always longed for. Everything goes smoothly until the moment he gets what he wants—and suddenly finds himself on the Island of Lost Souls, where fate holds him hostage as he relives his pirate father’s heinous memories. There is a chance Stefan could reverse his terrible fate and find redemption. Or, more likely, be damned by the gods of retribution forever. Either way, he’s running on borrowed time.

A Dead Man Tale On the Island of Lost Souls dead men do tell tales KR Patterson 9781507560334 Books Reviews

Really enjoyed the characters, and loved the way the author chose to help us view the past, to understand the present.
For a debut, this book is awesome. I was very impressed. It's the story of Stefan, the crown prince who grows up amidst rumors that he's actually the bastard son of a pirate. He decides to put his history and his misery to rest by executing the imprisoned pirate using some magical beads. But the magic backfires, spiraling him into an adventure that will either break him or turn him into the king he was always meant to be. It is intricately plotted, gripping, and beautifully written, and I look forward to reading more from this new author.
I've read it twice now! A very well-written novel with great imagery and original storyline. As Stefan had to relive certain memories from the pirate Graeme, I felt as if I were there as well. I was very invested with the characters and outcome from the beginning. The story includes suspense, action, mystery, and romance - it has it all.
Patterson writes the story of a shaken son beautifully, only this son is a prince whose paternal parentage is in question. Every step through Stefan's trials is an adventure with an unforgettable payoff. From beginning to end, you'll be pulled in, wrapped up in the depths of this psychological tale. There is a keen and sophisticated artistry here in the writing. I look forward to Patterson's next novel.
This is a fantasy book that takes many twists and turns. Once I got into the book, I wanted to see what would come next. I considered it a morality tale. The main characters are very conflicted by the circumstances they find themselves in. I would certainly recommend the book for those who enjoy this genre. I'm looking forward to the audio version. I have listened to a portion of it and find that it brings the events to life.
KR Patterson came out swinging with her debut novel and she hit it out of the park. As Stefan finds out the truth of his paternity he decides to take his anger out on the pirate that caused his family so much misery through magical beads he found in his mother's belongings. However the magic backfires and sends him to the Island of Lost Souls. You are weaved through time as Stefan re-lives key moments in not only his life but also his pirate father's life. The switch between Stefan and his memories through time and through others is done seamlessly. Will Stefan pass the tests before the portal closes and he is lost forever? Definitely worth the read and will be exciting to see what else this new author brings us!
Great job, especially for a debut novel. I read it twice.
