I was a little unsure of this book because of the dead body part, but I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! I’m so glad I decided to review this book for Sunday Street Team. Thank you Netgalley for giving me a copy in exchange for a honest review. This book is definitely 5 out of 5 stars.

This book really doesn’t have any slow parts. The writing and pacing was well done. The cover is simple, but super cute. I can’t believe this is the author’s first YA contemporary romance. She writes like a veteran of the genre. I can’t wait to read her next YA contemporary romance, whenever it comes out!

As I stated earlier, I was a little hesitant to read this because of the cadavers, but thankfully they weren’t overwhelming in the book. The bodies are only “shown” a few times, and the details aren’t too gory. If I can handle it, I think anyone can. The rest of the story overpowers the slight grossness of the dead bodies.

The romance was definitely believable, and I adored it. Bex and Jack are so cute! Jack has definitely been added to my book boyfriend list. I love, love, love him so much! He’s such a sweetheart and he’s pretty hot too. What a great combination! I squealed a few times while reading the book because I couldn’t contain my feels.

A couple of my favorite lines from the book were: “When the jacket stood back up, it grew arms and legs and a face that probably competed with Helen of Troy’s in the ship-launching department.” and “‘Do you ride?’ That sounded sort of dirty, and the way he looked at me felt sort of dirty, too. No one ever looked at me like that.”

Final note: This was such a fantastic book. I almost instantaneously pre-ordered a hardcover copy after I finished the ARC. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who loves YA contemporary romance, or just a book in general that’ll give you some amazing feels. I almost wish I hadn’t read it yet, just so I could experience it again for the first time.

Competently written and quite entertaining, but it suffers from the same syndrome as many YA novels--the boy version of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. He's handsome, interesting, smart, artsy, and has tousled hair. Oh, and his apparent bad boy acts are entirely due to noble and heartfelt motives. It's a good read, but a predictable one.
This book was really sweet and enjoyable. I am in a book club and this was our December read. Everyone really liked this book. The only critique for it was that it would have been a more dynamic book if it had been written in third person. The characters and their problems were all very believable. I'm in my late twenties and a mom so I find myself siding with the parents more often in these reads nowadays instead of the teens, but in this book I could really relate with the main characters. I believe the author handled young love very nicely. I would recommend this book to a friend.
I'm really not sure where to start with this review. I feel like there's so many points to hit on that I've re-written this intro 4-times. I think I'll just give up trying to organize the thoughts in my head and just jot them down in a disorderly fashion. My apologies.

This book, in short summary, is about two art-loving teenagers falling in love San Francisco. What sets this story apart from other romance novels (or at least those I've read thus far), is that the characters are capable of empathy and communication, and the main character isn't some girl with obvious mental instability who falls for a wolf in sheep's clothing. At first, this seems like a surefire winner, but unfortunately I was soon discover there are many more pitfalls for a book to fall into.

I feel like this novel really lacked any kind of conflict. The characters worked things out so easily, just by talking things through in a matter of a few lines, that any tension in the book was quickly dissolved. On one hand, it made the characters extremely likable, and in my opinion, real. On the other hand, it made for kind of a boring read. I really think this book could have been drastically improved by throwing in a few jerks to antagonize the main characters, a few people who couldn't be reasoned with and were just plain awful people. It kind of opened my eyes a bit, realizing that a true-to-life romance probably isn't that exciting from the outside looking in unless it has a few stumbles along the way.

That said, there were plenty of things I did like about this book. Besides the interesting characters, there was also realistic portrayals of sex, interesting dialogue and descriptions, multiple sub-plots, and actually a decent storytelling ability, so hence the 3 stars. I couldn't bring myself to give it 4 though, because truthfully, it felt like a 3-star read. I never got disgusted and threw the book away, yet I never got enthralled and just couldn't put it down.

Part of me thinks this is a fault of my tastes. I knew going into this that I've never really cared for romance. I prefer to read about things I just can't go out and do, like throw fireballs from my hands or ride a spaceship. If I want romance, I'll take my wife out to dinner and experience something real. Perhaps this book is actually just amazing, and but I'm just not it's target audience. I have yet to read a romance story I truly enjoy outside of fantasy book, which makes me wonder what it is I'm actually looking for here.

Overall, I think this book actually taught me a lot as a writer. A story can have a great setting, characters, etc etc etc, but without a solid plot of tension and intrigue, that story just isn't going to do too well.
I seriously LOVED this book. The writing was witty, and fun. I loved that sex was discussed in a healthy manner. The characters were so wonderfully unique. I loved them so much. This just jumped to the top of my contemporary faves!
I'm not a YA, but I do enjoy reading good YA because I teach high school and like to read what the "youths" might be reading (heh). Also, I think it's good for everyone to stay in touch with that part of themselves that is young and yearning, and reading YA is one of my ways to do just that.

Anyway.

Even though I'm not a YA reader, I really enjoyed this book. It's unconventional and, in my opinion, not as predictable of a story as it could have been. I don't want to spoil the book for others by naming the parts of the book that I guessed wrong about. However, I'll say that if you enjoy a good young love story, replete with realistic portrayal of family struggles, sex positivity (this I didn't find so realistic, but it's aspirational--hope to goodness more kids are being safe and smart about sex if they're having it), and touching relationships, go for this novel.
